Hi Eric, I like your sounds...they are very professional! In text adventures, in general, they seem most effective when used sparingly (e.g Zen Garden). In working on a couple of games I felt that there were a few standard situations where some form of sound would be beneficial. As well as general atmosphere music in selected places, I've identified four general situations:

1. Short encouraging sound indicating progress (e.g. finding an object; opening a locked door)
2. Longer encouraging sound indicating success after significant effort (e.g. completion of a maze; killing and end-level enemy)
3. Short discouraging sound suggesting a problem (e.g. trying a key that doesn't open a door; trying to take an object that can't be moved)
4. Short threatening sound indicating a challenge (e.g. appearance of an enemy)
   Do you have sounds that fit these categories?

I get emails every once in a while from folks who seem to be having a bit of trouble navigating the site. Here are some things to keep in mind that should hopefully help:

1. The titles of the pages in the tan box under the header image are actually links to the various pages. Hover over them to highlight them (a box appears around them) and then click.

2. I think sometimes people are fooled when they click on one of the page links, like for example "Fantasy 3" and nothing seems to happen. But if you look closer, you'll see that the title of the link you clicked on actually turns to bold indicating that you are now on that particular page. Simply scroll down to see the contents of that page.

3. Since all of the page links appear at the top of every page, it's easy to think that you haven't been taken anywhere after clicking on one of them. Again, notice that the title of the link you clicked on has now turned bold...and you have to scroll down to see the page contents.

I kinda wish you had used the Creative Commons license rather than rolling your own. A particular line in your own license is problematic.
"The use of the Licensed Material in media that violates Youtube community guidelines is prohibited."

This means that a game using your music may be okay one day, but then Youtube suddenly changes their community guidelines and a game which has nothing to do with Youtube at all is no longer allowed use your music.

You either have to remove that line as it's not needed since videos that violate Youtube guidelines will get removed so your music will be removed as well, or the creator may edit the video so it meets youtube guidelines.

Now if you as the creator of the music do not wish your music to be used with content that violate youtube guidelines then you should list those criteria in the license itself so the license it fully self contained and not reliant on the unknown content of a external license/guideline that can change at any moment. If you do not wish your music to be used for pornographic purposes (game, video, etc) then state so clearly in your license.

You could also edit the line in question to: "The use of the Licensed Material in media that violates Youtube community guidelines is prohibited if used in a video uploaded to Youtube."

But this is the equivalent to not having the line at all. Or do you mean that if the music is used in a youtube video that violate youtube guidelines you deny the creator to use any of your music for any purpose at all?

As long as you're not using my work in pornography, there's no problem so no worries. :-)

I’ve had a number of requests for uncompressed versions of my tracks, so I’ve begun making them available on Gumroad for a small free to help support the site. The MP3 files that I make freely available sound very good, but the original uncompressed WAV files sound really incredible…give them a try!

If anyone is curious as to why I didn’t upload WAV files to begin with, the reason is that my web hosting service places limitations on file sizes and WAV files tend to be very large.

Anyhow, it’s going to take some time to upload everything, so if anyone has any requests for WAV versions of tracks you happen to like, just drop me an email and I’ll upload them to Gumroad for you. Feel free to convert to Ogg or any format you like.

Super high-quality Ogg files are now available for every track on my Fantasy 1 page as well as my Sci-Fi/Space page. And for about half of the tracks on my Looping Music page and my Horror/Surreal page. They sound amazing…almost as good as uncompressed WAV files…give them a try if they work in your projects.

Meanwhile, if anyone has requests for Ogg versions of tracks that you happen to like but aren’t on the site yet, just let me know and I’ll be happy to upload them for you.

Well, I’m up to 1,960 tracks…it’s hard to believe…I might actually reach 2,000 by the end of the year! Anyhow, I just wanted to send out a big THANK YOU to those of you who have showed your support for my work and my website…your contributions have allowed me to make my monthly payments on my synths. They are all top-of-the-line instruments and I think it’s reflected in the quality of the sound they put out.

The whole point of my soundimage project was to make good-sounding music available to anyone regardless of their budget…and it’s definitely working thanks to you!

I think I ran across your website years ago when I was dabbling with game creation and even back then your music was amazing. Your collection now is even more impressive . Big news, guys! All of my tracks on my Dark/Ominous page are now available as very high quality Ogg files. They sound amazing…almost as good as the original WAV files that they were created from…and are much much smaller in size…perfect for videogames. Give them a try.

On that note, some people have asked me why I’m offering Ogg files when they can simply convert my free MP3 tracks to Ogg themselves. You are certainly welcome to do this, but it won’t increase the quality of the tracks at all because you’re starting with MP3. The reason my Ogg files sound so great is that I’m creating them from my original WAV recordings.

Here’s some cool news:

Free looping video clips are on the way that you’ll be able to use in games, for website backgrounds, Zoom backgrounds and all kinds of other things.

A good number of game developers have asked me if they can download multiple music tracks all at once instead of one at a time, so I’m making Ogg music packs available that include all of the tracks for any given page once that page is full and I’m no longer adding any more tracks to it.

You’ll see a button near the top of the page if a music pack is available.
