I downloaded the SAPI4 file from the Quest website to hear how it works. After downloading and extracting its files, I checked the "Enable speech" box, and loaded a game (into 3.53 version). No speech though. I tested it on Mansion II and King's Quest IV. I tried also checking "Speak everything which is printed on the screen," but get a Runtime Error (some 10 digit long number) with an "out of bounds" message when either game is loaded. Any suggestions? I use 98se.

I could never get that to work when I ran Quest under Win 98, so I gave up on it. If you try it in Win XP, it should work, because everything I've tried that uses Text-to-Speech works. However I haven't tried it. Someone else might of though.

Microsoft should've supplied a noose with 98se. I have two computers, and either one of them are so old that 98se is all they can handle... even with a memory upgrade! Oh, well! :{ Can you give me a hint concerning the tonal quality of the voice used in SAPI? Is it very mechanical sounding or is it like a man's voice or a woman's voice and can it be altered?

It's definitely quite terrible, and more suited for a good laugh than any practical usage to the average person.

98se was quite good... My dad still swears by it....
