When I try to run QDK, I get an error message:

Run-time error '429':
ActivX component can't create object


During installation, there was one issue where something involving the Windows registry couldn't be altered. I chose to ignore that--could that be the problem, if so what is the fix?

Forgot to add, I am running Vista Basic, on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop.

I've downloaded the trial version, but I've heard really good things about Quest, and if I like it, I will definitely be purchasing it.

Yes it will almost certainly be because of the component that didn't register when you installed Quest.

Please try installing again, and make sure your user account has administrator privileges, and that no other programs are running.

If you still get the error message, please let me know which component fails.

Ok, I tried running the setup as admin, still got the problem. Looks like this:

C:\Windows\system32\SSUBTMR.DLL
Unable to register the DLL/OCX: Regsvr32 failed with exit code 0x3

Then it lets me retry, abort, or ignore. Obviously, retrying is not successful...

Strange - not sure why it's happening. Anyway, QDK only used this component for the "bubble tips" that display on things like the room alias textbox. It seems to in fact be unnecessary - it works just as well without this component.

So, I've updated the build and setup package for Quest 4.04 to remove this component. Please download the updated file from www.axeuk.com/quest/quest404.exe and let me know if it works - if it does I'll update the Quest Pro package as well.

Success! The QDK app now runs. So far, this seems to be a wonderful program!

I am just wondering, before I buy it, is it possible to create an executable version of a game? That is to say, can I make a game and then distribute it in a format that does not require the QUEST system to run it?

I'm working on a system called Quest Packager which will let you create a setup EXE file for your game. I can send you a beta version if you get Quest Pro (it requires the Quest Compiler to make a CAS file), and the final version will be released some time in the new year.

I just bought Quest PRO, having an issue with download, I sent you an email. Also if you can email me info on the .EXE compiler that'd be great.
