Run time error 53

Alf
Good morning, y'all.

I installed the latest Quest at home last night. When I try to run a game, I get a runtime error '53', "File not found".

The install went clean. About the only other change I made was to move q3ext files to a different folder, assuming they were replaced by typelib and no longer needed.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Alf

Any Ideas... hmmm

try not to MOVE ANYTHING! lol. redownload, run it, and see if that works, if it works, dont touch anything in that folder

The q3ext files will still be needed by a game that needs them - it won't automatically use TypeLib. However this shouldn't cause run-time errors - it should instead just report an error in the ASL log. Does the error occur when you try to run any game? Does it happen as soon as you launch the game?

The only time this error usually happens is if QUEST.DAT is missing, but then it occurs when Quest starts, rather than when it tries to run a game (unless you're double-clicking a game file in Explorer, in which case that will happen at the same time).

Alf
It occurs as soon as I try to run any game. One I made at work yesterday (small - just a few rooms), another from the downloads. Is there anything specific I need to look for? - Alf

I don't know why this should be happening. Check that QUEST.DAT and ENGLISH.LDF are definitely in your Quest directory, and check that this definitely is the Quest you are running (if in doubt, start QUEST.EXE directly and see if it still happens).

I presume the games you've tried aren't trying to access any particular sound or graphic files which may be missing? Do they try to use any libraries?

Do you see the progress bar appear? (You may need to move the error message box)? If so, what does it say?

Alf
Thank you, Alex. I'll check it out this evening when I get home and will let you know. Until then, Have a good weekend! - Alf

Alf
Well, instead of trying to fix the Quest problem, I spent the weekend replacing the HDA in my PC. Now Quest works. Probably was something I did. Thanks anyway for the help! - Alf
