Well then I extend my luck to you - I am myself on the same task.
It'll be a long journey for you!

Free Tip #1: Abandon status variables, they are the most horribly broken aspect of ASL as it stands. It's much more reliable to read/write to/from properties of objects than anything else.
Geared towards this specific task, I'll suggest that you just make a simple universal "TAKE DAMAGE" procedure in which, object a and b are both figured from where the procedure is called, then remove health/award experience as necessary.
P.S. Dial up internet is awful.

Really? I love status variables more than properties myself... Those are perfect for HP (if HP goes below 0 at any time then player = dead).
Of course, I only use certain ones (current HP, MP, Gil and status effect list)... Everything else is actually plain variiables and properties.
Of course you may well be speaking from a QNet background - where it probably is better to use properties than status var's.
