Easter Game CHALLENGE!

K.V.

Anyone up for a challenge?

Create a game that in some way involves Easter, and post a link to it in this thread by Saturday at 11:59 PM (UTC).

Whoever gets the best reviews will have bragging rights.

That's all. It's just for fun.

C'mon, man. You KNOW that I cannot resist a challenge and you KNOW that I just started back on X3. Now what the front door am I supposed to do??

Easter Game it is.

Sorry, X3. You'll have to wait a bit.

Great idea!
I'm still a complete newbie and don't dare to switch projects in the midst of one.
I'll be following this thread closely though!

I really want to do this; and I've got an idea already.

But I'm panicking right now; latest book is three days past its scheduled release date, I need to do a ton of extra marketing to make sure anyone sees it without the benefit of Amazon's "≤28 days between releases" Algorithm bonus, and I still need to write 7555 words this month to meet my goal.

I'll try to make a game, but it may well be a very rushed attempt where you need to type "xyzzy" to skip over some unfinished clues.

48 hour challenge to make a game???!!!
Are you nuts???
(Challenge accepted)

I hear you, DL. 9:30p - 2:30a and I got about 1/4 done. Will be working on it today between innings of the Reds game (go Reds!) and the beers this evening... Diving in now!!!

Saturday at 11:59 PM (UTC)??? What's UTC?

UTC is the standard time that all the time zones are measured relative to; equivalent to GMT I think.

Yes it is...
AKA: Zulu...

K.V.

I have to subtract 5 hours from UTC time to get my time.

Those in the UK add 1 hour.

...and, like mrangel said: UTC time is actually Greenwich Mean Time.

It looks like we're going to have a few new, short games to play! (Whoo-hoo!)

Any kind of game is cool with me. You can make it with Quest, Squiffy, Inform, code your own, or whatever you like! As long as we can play it online!

Also, it could be a one-move game, or a 2-hour game, or whatever! As longs as it has something to do with Easter, I believe the judges * will allow it!

"There are no judges" xD

I actually tried to make something but with 2 kids, 2 cats, 2 inlaws and 2 parents running crazy in the apartment the result was.... null.

I will get mine done but it might be a day late. As always, I went a little overboard. Shocker.

I have about 2/3 of my stuff done but headed off to watch the Reds. Will see what happens when I get back!

Where are all the gaaaaaaaaaames?!

K.V.

We are all masters in the art of overkill.

I might have my game finished within 6 hours and 17 minutes....

K.V.

Should we extend the deadline to 5:59 AM (UTC)?

That would still make the games available everywhere on Easter morning.

Yes!! Please.

Well, I've got something like 4 hours of work left to do on actual work type stuff today :S So don't think this game's going to be ready. So far it only includes 2 eggs, and the locations are featureless placeholders ):

Still, maybe I'll have it ready for next year.

K.V.

Yeah... I keep going back and forth on it. One minute, I'm thinking there's not enough time to finish. The next minute, I'm thinking, 'how many eggs do there really need to be, anyway? Especially if there's a puzzle of some sort to solve before acquiring each egg...'

Ooh! I just had an idea! Gotta go!

You’re stealing my idea!

Try THE NAIL ( very short Easter game ) I just put it on.

K.V.

"The game's all set up! Now to polish things up," says I, as the first deadline I set whizzes by.

I am EST, so I am playing by that time zone! I've still got 3.5 hours. The problem is, I have about 5 hours of game creation left! Go, coffee, go!

K.V.

You have to subtract 4 hours from UTC time to get Eastern time.

Either way, I think we've all got the same amount of time... (I want some of what XM is drinking!)

The current deadline is 5:59 AM (UTC), which is 12:59 AM for me, 1:59 AM for XM, and 6:59 am in the UK.

...but, no matter where you are, you have 5 hours and 15 minutes starting...

Now.

I'm cruising along now. Forgive my puzzles if some of them are a bit easy!!

K.V.

"Tick-tock," goes the clock...

"The current deadline is 5:59 AM (UTC), which is 12:59 AM for me..."

12:59!!!

K.V.

By the way, there really isn't an Easter challenge!

APRIL FOOLS!!!

AND HAPPY EASTER!!!!!

K.V.

Just kidding! There is a challenge!!! (We swears on the Precious!)

I've been working on my game since I first created this thread.

I got one... (kinda), still working on it, but it is too liner for me...
But here was the notes for the first version if anyone wants to know...

knock, knock...
you get up
there is a small pink bunny at the door, holding a small grass weaved basket with several colorful eggs
lieing in a bed of green grass.
"I need your help to hide my eggs for tomorrow and I'm running out of time, please help..."
So, you're the Easter Bunny???
Um, yea, sure... but I really need your help
Help? yes or no...
No... sorry, but I gota get up early to get to work...
Yes... Sure, you help the bunny...
several rooms, 'hide' eggs everywhere...
when done, you go back to bed...
You are awaken by shouting and explosions...
Outside it is a war zone...
Little pink bunnies with big guns are shooting eggs at houses where they explode and burn the houses.
Police and others with guns are shooting at the bunnies...
There are people and bunnies lieing everywhere.
You hear someone calling out orders on the left and see a big pink bunny that looks
alot like the one from last night.
He hops over to your window and leans on the sill,
"Thanks for the help last night, with out you, I could not have gotten all the portal eggs in place in time...
That's why we are sparing your house." and then he hops off to join the fight.
You look out at all the bodies everywhere...
"What have I done??? What have I done???"
Then you see an egg flying your way and you duck as it crashes through your window...
Before you can do anything, it beeps... then again, and again... faster and faster until...
With a bang you sit upright in bed, knocking the anchovie pizia onto the floor, and notice the TV playing a war movie...
Relaxed you check the time, 7:30, time to get up...
You check your phone... Saturday??? It's only Saturday??? Must have forgotten to clear the alarm clock...
(You go through your day, then go to bed...)
You are awaken at 2:30 am my someone knocking on the door...
You open it to see a small pink bunny holding an Easter basket...
"Sorry to bug you, but I need your help..."
[end]

Hey DL, I like your idea of the player hiding the eggs. That gives me an idea -- a game where author A creates a world with many hiding places. Player B then wanders that world hiding eggs and saves the game. Then player C reloads the game and has to find the eggs.

Self-beta-testing under way...

K.V.

http://textadventures.co.uk/games/view/8yjd4mgqheeans5_dw_bpq/easter-eggs

Un-beta-tested, and still late.

K.V.

Just submitted an update.

Added quite a few hints. Fixed a few bugs.

Enter HELP for help!

K.V.

The deadline has now been extended to 5:59 PM (UTC).

(We don't want to break XanMag, do we?)

Next year, we'll plan ahead.

Dcoder...
That would be real easy with BASIC where file reads and file writes are simple...
Actually... that could be the answer.
A makes the world and uses code that would save the "egg hiding" locations...
B would play the game with the "hide" option, then select the hide locations which would be saved in the file.
C would play the game with the "hunt" option, the program would load the egg file, and "hide" the eggs...
If there is no egg file, the "hunt" option would not be allowed.
Could be fun... 1 main world program, then we trade egg files to search for each other's hidden eggs...

What do you know? I get stuck on one stupid error on my testing. Will be posted shortly!

K.V.

I just updated one last time (for at least 4 hours).

Nothing important. Just added some stuff to an NPC.

K.V.

HAPPY EASTER, EVERYONE!

@DL -
Exactly! You could have 3 (or more) players, A, B, and C. Each player creates a virtual world with hiding places. Each player then passes their world to the next player in a clockwise fashion (A to B, B to C, C to A). Then each player hides their eggs (B hides his eggs in A's world, C in B's world, etc.). They pass worlds again and hunt for eggs in that world (B hunts in C's world, C in A's, etc.). Scoring would be based on how many eggs you find in one world, and how many of your hidden eggs were not found in the other world.

Completed! Only about 1.5 hours after the "deadline". Enjoy. Let me know if you find any bugs (as I'm sure I didn't catch them all!)

Looks like everyone had the same idea :p
I was being a little silly with it, though. Wish I'd managed to find the time to finish the project.

K.V.

I just fixed a bug or few.

http://textadventures.co.uk/games/view/8yjd4mgqheeans5_dw_bpq/easter-eggs

Everyone with a game idea:

Don't let that deadline stop you! Post a link here whenever your game is ready!

The games are similar!

XM and I have two or three similar "puzzles"!

K.V.

DL and DC,

A makes a Quest game with hiding spots and a container full of eggs, then emails the published game to B.

B plays the game, hiding all of the eggs, then saves the game. B emails that save file to C.

C finds the eggs.

NOTES:

  • B and C would need the Windows version of Quest.

  • I don't think C would need the actual .quest file. I think you can play from a save game without the original file.

Don't let that deadline stop you! Post a link here whenever your game is ready!

I fully intend to. But been dipping in and out of incoherent anxiety for the weekend so far; so achieved very little.

K.V.

I just fixed a few minor bugs and added a progress bar using jQuery API, which is included in Quest!

http://textadventures.co.uk/games/view/8yjd4mgqheeans5_dw_bpq/easter-eggs

I also added a display verb to Granny to make it so you can click through the entire game if you don't like to type!

Mine should be full go too. Got rid of a few minor typos and a mild issue with the orange egg. =)

Let me know if you find any buggers. Thanks!

@KV,

What is the max number of points in your game? I think I ended with 42?

K.V.

Just applied a fix for people playing on iThings (I think).

http://textadventures.co.uk/games/view/8yjd4mgqheeans5_dw_bpq/easter-eggs

Also added the max score to the status. (It is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.)

Added even more display verbs. You can definitely breeze through without typing anything.

You can enter MAP to toggle the map on and off, and PANES to toggle the panes. The same goes for the compass (if you pick it up).

In case anyone's amused, I've finally found time to take a look at this game.
Half an hour in, I have the following function. I would be highly amused to see if anyone can guess why an Easter game would require this function :p

Spoilers, maybe
 <function name="ContainsTea" parameters="room" type="boolean">
    return (ListCount(FilterByAttribute(GetAllChildObjects(from), "is_tea", true)) = 0)
  </function>

It's called 3 times from a function called MoveTea (from, to), which is called from the changedparent script of all objects with the is_tea flag (currently a box of tea, a jar of tea, a teabag, a teapot, and a cup of tea). MoveTea itself is 55 lines of ugly script.

Is this what you would call "a little late"???
http://textadventures.co.uk/games/view/h4scudnhnua09ccwz_-hyg/easter
I had most of this done by Easter, but the ending was just too cheesy for my tastes...
And a few bug that refused to die...
I killed the last one today...
(Yes, this one is just a little 'different'...)
(OOPS... there were a few bugs... They're dead now.)
Ver 2.0... better, improved, and hopefully with no bugs...
