It's a warm summer evening in New York City.
The date is July 25th, 1922. One of your best gals set you up with her boyfriend's cousin. He arrives at your house in a blue Model T, and he seems enough like a gentleman even if he's a little rough around the edges.
"What's your name, miss?" he asks.
You say "<<textbox "$name" "">>" and ask for his.
"I'm Leo," he replies. There's a short pause before he continues on.
"Well, now that all the niceties are out of the way, let's [[go somewhere]]!"
Leo drives you to Central Park so that two of you can take a nice long stroll while it's still light out. You realize fairly quickly that he's very interested in local nightlife.
He tells you that he thinks that you're just the cat's pajamas! You blush, flattered, and he starts telling you about a swanky West Egg party that he caught wind of. It seems like it would be outrageous but totally chaotic, and you two probably wouldn't be spending a lot of quality time with one another.
When he's done telling you about the party, he starts going on and on about this secret speakeasy he was at just last Thursday. He says it's very elite, that all the wealthiest, most educated people spend time there. //You wonder to yourself how he ended up there//. He says that the two of you could have a lovely dinner date and some drinks if you wanted to go there.
Leo asks where you would rather go.
"The night is still young, $name!
Do you want to get [[dinner]]? Or do you want to go to the [[party]]?"
You want to get to know a little more about Leo, so you decide to take him up on the dinner and drinks.
You start to regret this decision a bit when you arrive at a barber shop. You're wary when you enter because the place seems so normal.
//Did Leo bring you here just to get a haircut before you finish your date? He could've planned that better//.
It takes Leo a few minutes to negotiate with the barber, but after a few minutes a well dressed man opens a previously hidden door to reveal a staircase.
Leo offers you his arm and the two of you [[walk downstairs]].Leo drives you to the party in West Egg. When you arrive, you're overwhelmed by the size of the mansion and amount of people that are inside. As Leo leads you inside, the colors and sounds are so vibrant that they are almost painful.
You got separated from Leo in the crowd, and you're trying to find a place to sit down when an intimidating dark haired woman grabs your arm. She introduces herself as Jordan Baker and you give her your name.
"You look like you need to relax a little, $name. Let's grab a drink, hmm?"
Jordan's offer is tempting. She's an interesting woman and you want to [[have a drink]] and enjoy the party. You also know that you should [[look for Leo]], since he's your ride home and your date. The speakeasy does not disappoint! Leo was right, there are a ton of strange, presumably wealthy men here. Other girls about your age are dancing around, giggling and drunk.
Your "dinner" is egg sandwiches, which you don't even really like, but the place is so interesting that you it doesn't matter.
Leo spends the better part of an hour trying to discuss golf with you (one of his many new pursuits), but it's very one-sided because you don't know much about the sport. He's a sweet guy, but he's boring you half to death.
"$name, can I get you a drink?" He asks.
You're faced with a dilemma. Stay and [[drink]], because you'll probably never be able to get back into this place, or have him [[drive you home]] because he's really starting to put a damper on your good mood from earlier, and the alcohol is illegal anyway. You accept Leo's offer to buy you a drink, and then another. You fully intend to dance all night with him, but a mysterious man catches your eye. The man approaches you two.
"Can I steal the lady for a dance or two?" He asks Leo.
Leo looks startled but he agrees, and you are escorted to the other side of the room by this handsome stranger.
He takes one of your hands and leans in close to you.
"I haven't been able to take my eyes off of you all night. I want you to accompany me to a lounge I own in East Egg and get to know you a bit better."
You feel conflicted. You feel inexplicably drawn to this man. He's wealthy and attractive, and you want to [[leave with him]]. On the other hand, Leo has been sweet to you all night and he brought you here in the first place. You want to [[stay here]] because you wouldn't feel right leaving with another man.
Your date with Leo is lackluster. He is fairly drunk by the time you convince him to take you home, and you spend the whole ride worried that he'll crash the car. He's is nowhere near as charming as he had been earlier that night.
You end your night miserable.
[[Restart]]You leave with the stranger, forgetting all about Leo as he whisks you away to his glamorous, old money lounge. He romances you for almost two years before you marry, and you want for nothing. You leave the stranger behind and start looking around for Leo. When you ind him, you share a final dance before leaving the speakeasy. Leo offers to [[take you home]], but he tells you that there's also still time to [[attend the party]] if you want to. You decide that you're not overly attached to Leo. After all, you only met today, and you should enjoy the party rather than go looking for him. Jordan assures you that Leo will be fine and hands you a drink.
She motions over your shoulder at someone that you can't see.
"Gloria!" She greets the woman. "Come meet my new friend $name. We've just met and I'm rescuing her from a dull date."
You open your mouth to protest that //no, Leo is not a// dull //date per say, he's just not with you right now//, but you see Jordan's friend and you're starstruck.
"Gloria" is Gloria Swanson, your favorite film stars, and she's standing right next to you, speaking to you.
"A dull date you say?" She smiles conspiratorially at Jordan. "Why don't you come dance with me instead? I promise I won't bore you."
You gut reaction isto say "[[Of course I'll dance with you!]]" but you're nervous. You don't want to make a fool of yourself in front of Gloria Swanson, and you're really not a good dancer, so you hesitate and consider [[rejecting her offer]].You pass up the drink and go looking for your date. The building is so big you worry that you'll never be able to find him.
You're almost ready to give up when you spot Leo on a balcony, looking out over the grounds. He lights up when he notices you and calls out to you "I've been looking all over for you, $name !" He offers his hand and asks you for a dance, which you accept.
The two of you have a lovely night, and when Leo asks you to attend another party with him next Saturday, you say yes. It's nearly midnight and you've already had a long night with Leo, but you're not ready for it to end. Leo drives you to the party in West Egg. When you arrive, you're overwhelmed by the size of the mansion and amount of people that are inside. As Leo leads you inside, the colors and sounds are so vibrant that they are almost painful.
You lose him somewhere in the crowd, and you're trying to find a place to sit down when an intimidating dark haired woman grabs your arm. She introduces herself as Jordan Baker and you give her your name.
"You look like you need to relax a little, $name. Let's [[have a drink]], hmm?"
He tells you that he had a wonderful time with you and that he would love to see you again. You share a goodnight kiss at the door, and you go to bed.You eagerly accept Gloria's offer. The two of you talk and dance for hours, and you forget all about Leo.
She says that she wants you to come work on the next movie she's starring in. You tell her that you would absolutely love to. You leave the party with her, ready to start a new life.
You live out the rest of your days with her as a wealthy actress. You let your nerves get the best of you and tell her that you love her movies but you can't dance with her. Gloria looks disappointed but shrugs it off.
"I should really go looking for Leo," you say, and leave the two women to go find your date.
It takes you two hours to find him, and when you finally do, he's passed out drunk on top of a piano. You're stranded in a stranger's house in West Egg at three in the morning. You have to call a cab, and you end your night miserable.
