I live in a flat near Manchester with my husband Graham Dawson and two cats. I have a PhD in Classics and Ancient History. While I primarily focus on writing static fiction (mainly speculative), I'm a long-term player of IF, and recently started breaking into that field as a creator as well. The Ludum Dare game jam became my impetus for creating games. Each of his interactive fictions has started that way, with a relatively simple idea that somehow evolved into a little world.\n\n"Goose, Egg, Badger" was Brian's first work using Inform, a programming language by Graham Nelson that compiles to Z-code, the same format used by Infocom's classic text adventures. This one targets the Z5 machine, which means that it faces old-fashioned limitations on memory usage.

It's a politically impassioned game about how the philosophy of civil rights in America has recently become less about protecting historically oppressed people and more about making sure that people who have money are free to use it however they want. The “message” of the game is that the wealthy people who fought for this pro-corporate understanding of civil rights have essentially rewritten their own version of civil rights history, in which they misappropriate the role of protagonist. I think storytelling is a big part of Supreme Court lawmaking, and therefore doing literary criticism on Supreme Court opinions can be a powerful way of pointing out legal injustices.\n\nRead it [[here|http://play.textadventures.co.uk/games/bf2qqjpljuqqpbf6ga8kfg/CitizensOnTheMountaintop.html]].
\n\n\n
10 Second Defence -- [[Christina Nordlander|author7]]

"10 Second Defence" is a one-room game where you only have a short number of moves to set up a trap before a hitman enters your flat. This piece (in three parts) was inspired by the dramatic rainy season that sweeps across the Southwest in the summer months, often after an extended period of drought. The hyperlinks within the piece include both visual images and audio/video. The former are meant to be glanced at before returning to the writing, while the latter are meant to play in the background (layered one upon the other by the time you've reached the end). But as with all interactive art, how the reader chooses to interact with it is his or her business.\n\nRead it [[here|http://sdefreitastimmons.wordpress.com/2012/06/20/monsoon-variations-a-hypertext-prose-poem/]].
\n\n<<else if $winner eq "rendition">>\n\n
rendition -- [[nespresso|author3]]

They caught Abdul during an insurgency in the east. He tried to take out a regiment with some home-made explosives strapped to his chest. They didn't explode, so pretty soon the coalition had a real live terrorist in their clutches. But who sent him? The fundamentalists over the border? He has been shipped over here to be "questioned". Perhaps you will pursue your family vendetta, and perhaps not. Perhaps the lure of power and wealth will instead become your main driving force, as you strive to claw your way up through -- and ultimately aim to dominate -- the ruthless, violent, blood-drenched criminal underworld of a major city in 'The Roaring Twenties'.\n\nRead it [[here|http://dl.dropbox.com/u/82562041/web/vendetta1/index.html]].
\n\n<<else if $winner eq "10 Second Defence">>\n\n
10 Second Defence -- [[Christina Nordlander|author7]]

"10 Second Defence" is a one-room game where you only have a short number of moves to set up a trap before a hitman enters your flat.
\n\n<<endif>>
