Tips for someone new to text adventure games?

Hello! I would really appreciate any tips tricks and advice that anyone could give me about how to make better text adventure games. I have just started my first game and I am wondering about ways I could speed up the process and make my game more enjoyable to play.

play other games and see what is popular.
Start with something you know.

Start SLOW. Fiddle with this. Fiddle with that. You’ll have a bunch of little texts games. Ask questions when you run into trouble spots. Before too long, you’ll get it!

Don’t try to make game one on your first go. You’ll find ugly bits all over!

And, make sure you use download version, not online.

Welcome to Quest and making text adventure games! Here's some of my advice:

  1. Start a throwaway game. Just mess around, go nuts! While making this throwaway game, slink around the forums and tutorials to get yourself started.
  2. The forums are your best friend, just dive into them! If you have questions, feel free to ask! If you don't feel up to making a post, look around and there's a good chance that someone else has had the same problem and their question has been answered.
  3. Decide what you want to do with your game. You have several editors here, both online versions and downloads. Do you want to make something really long and complicated, at the cost of being unable to paste your game without requiring the Quest engine? Or would you rather go with Squiffy, where it's less complex but it is all in HTML and is easy to move?
  4. Take notes. Create a document or something where you can keep track of everything you're doing. Personally, I am using Ftsmind to create a flowchart and keep track of how I want my game to progress. Other programs are out there, if you'd like.
  5. Have fun! There is a learning curve, but once you've got the basics, you'll be flying through!

I hope this is a helpful list, and I wish you luck on creating a game!

TIPS FOR SPAMMERS

If you're going to spam in English, learn to speak English!

Also, don't use a divisive public figure as your avatar -- especially that particular notable. No one who has any sense will ever take your words seriously with that avatar.

Wait... I guess most of the people* who like the dude in that picture will believe anything, without verifying whether or not it is true, and that is your target audience. Never mind. Well played.

* NOTE: There are some very fine people on both sides!

Concerning spammers

We're gonna make them eat our [EXPLETIVE DELETED]; then [EXPLETIVE DELETED] out our [EXPLETIVE DELETED]; then eat their [EXPLETIVE DELETED], which is made out of our [EXPLETIVE DELETED] that we made them eat!

And all you [EXPLETIVE DELETED] are next!!!

I really considered leaving the spammers post alone so people could more appropriately appreciate your response. After much debate, I deleted it. But, please, everyone enjoy RHs response.

And spammers, please keep your spam relevant to the discussion at hand. I hate that random [EXPLETIVE DELETED] that clearly marks a post as spam. Make me WORK to figure out that you're just spamming -- if it's too easy it's not fun.

I have just started my first game and I am wondering about ways I could [...] make my game more enjoyable to play.

Make a game in which we can battle spammers.

...and make us have to eat Spam to regain health.

...and give us beer. Lots of beer. Like, lots and lots of beer.

Just kidding!

Make games for you. [EXPLETIVE DELETED] what we like. If you put your heart into it and make something you can enjoy after having written it, other players will most assuredly enjoy it too.

Bwahahahaha!

[P]lease, everyone enjoy RHs response.

[RH takes a bow.]

Thank ya'. Thank ya' very much.

Yeah!

...and pick an avatar with some Big 'Uns!
