Shifting in his seat, his feet tapping the wooden floor, he looks straight through you.
You turn away. Exhale. Walk through the door and sit down opposite him. Out of your pocket, you pull out a micro recorder. You laugh, one hour of tape, you can do better...
A man is dead and everything points to him, make notes with a sharp HB pencil and comebacks with an even sharper wit.
An innocent man could walk down death row or a guilty man could walk out free. [[It's your move.->Start]]The numbers start rolling over on the recorder...
You look at him, disgruntled and his clothes soaking from the rain outside. It drips onto the floor...
Better start with the standard questions. Need to note down his [[appearance->Appearance]]."Sir, for the recording, could you describe your physical description?"
"Sure. I guess I'm about 6'2". I have grey hair, green eyes. I hit the gym most days."
"Any facial hair?"
"Oh yeah, well, I have a moustache, grey also."
"Thanks."
[["Do you have any idea as to why your here?"->Question]]He paused.
"No."
"Strange. Gossip like this normally travels lighting fast. Dr Ebert, CEO of Glassware, was reported missing last Thursday. He's been gone for eight days now and we only have a few leads. You are one of them."
"Well there's no way that I know anything! I'm just a low level [[assistant->Assistant]], I help with [[research->Research]]. I don't even now him personally!""Assistant... Who exactly do you assist?"
"My boss, [[Julie->Julie]], runs the laboratories. She meets with [[clients->Clients]] whilst we do the actual science."
"So she would have met with Ebert?"
"I guess so. Like I said, I wasn't involved with that part of the company.""What kind of research does Glassware do?"
"We produce... I'm not sure if I'm able to say actually."
"We can make a deal."
I leaned in a bit closer, asserting dominance in the situation.
"I'm not sure about this. I signed some documents, NDAs I think, I was told that the [[consequences->Consequences]] would be dire."
"Who made these threats?"
"I'm not sure. I just received a few [[e-mails->Emails]] after I joined.""Meetings with clients... What sort of [[clients->Sort]]?""Meetings with clients... What sort of [[clients->Sort]]?""Consequences, you say. What sort?"
"You know, Glassware has access to everything I own, it's one of the conditions when you're hired. My social, bank statements, passwords. My life could be torn apart."
Hands in hair, he seemed distraught.
"Did you think they were going to follow through on their threats."
"I've heard about [[others->Others]] they've done it to.""Could I see these e-mails?"
[["Sure"->Sure]]"So someone else was threatened..."
"Jen..."
He was suddenly quiet, they must have been close.
"What happened to Jen?"
"It was about five days ago. We were getting lunch when Jen got a call, she needed to go back to the office."
He pulled his phone out again.
"But then she sent me this text."
Hi, sorry about rushing off. I'm catching a plane. I'll see you when I'm back. xx
"Where do you think she went?"
"I have no idea, but the execs recently started to send off the experienced to [[Boston->Clients]]. But if she went to Boston, I'm sure she would've come back by now."dEAR jAMES

I cut him off.
"We have the train ticket."

He was suprised. I guess he didn't know we had all of his belongings.
"Who did you meet with?"
"There was this guy, we met in a bar I was told to go to. Shady area, kind of area you wouldn't take your mother. We didn't exchange a word. Slid me a napkin, an address. So, I went there, a package and a card. I take it straight back, never opened the package. It was surreal, after, I asked around and nobody else had been to a meeting like this. They'd all been to black and white board room [[talks->Discuss]].""What do you talk about in these meetings?"
He stays silent for a few seconds.
"You said something about a plea bargain?"
"Unless you're Ebert's [[killer->Killer]], your not our focus."
He exhales deeply and looks at me.
"We sent out a batch of product but our chemical stores had been tampered with. A series of companies reveived the incorrect concentration, 0.5% instead of 0.005%. Deadly. We were all under [[review->Review]], it was probably someone from within the lab.""Actually, I've only been to one of the meetings once, they never told me who I was meeting with."
(if: (history:) contains "Others")[
He slipped. He said he was "low-level" before and now he's going to meetings.
]
"But you went anyway? What sort of [[meeting->Meeting]] was it, what did you [[discuss->Discuss]]?""Who do you think the saboteur is?"
"You know, I reckon it wasn't even from inside the company. Who would destroy their own company? My gut says it was an [[outsider->Outsider]], someone who plays the stock market. I don't normally follow Wall Street but we get stocks with the company and they did numbers. Not so much now."
"But why hasn't the [[news->News]] reported on these deaths. Surely someones made a connection."
"I guess that's why we had so many client meetings."
"What exactly do you mean by that?"
"Well, if I were to cover up our involvement. I'd spread some [[hush money->Hush]].""What do they think they're going to find?"
"I honestly don't know. I guess they want to find the [[saboteur->Killer]]. Cost a lot of money, our reputation and a bunch of people were killed.""Who would want Glassware stock to fall? Does Glassware have a rival company?"
"Nobody competes with us directly, we have the market cornered. You have to give them credit, those execs run a tight ship. However, Ebert never made any friends. There are plenty who want him to disappear."
"So your saying that someone sabotaged Glassware so that the business would crash, then what?"
"The sabotage wouldn't collapse us, as I said, tight ship. But if Ebert was still here, I bet you'd be investigating him. You're a smart guy, maybe you would've made the connection between Glassware and the deaths. Ebert would probably be willing to [[disappear->Disappear]] and have someone take his place.""I'll have someone check through local news for deaths that fit the bill. In the mean time, you're going have to tell me about this [[outsider->Outsider]].""You think the meetings were a cover up for hush money?"
"Sure, it would make sense. Anyone who knew about Ebert's [[situation->Disappear]] could take advantage of him. He probably sent workers who already knew about the incident so that nobody who didn't know had to get involved."
(if: (history:) contains "Meeting")[
"Didn't you say that you took a package back from your meeting. What could be in that?
"I don't know, I didn't open it."
"I guess I will have to look into finding that."
"Like I said, a [[package and a card->EndB]]."
]Interesting. This certaintly changes the situation.
"So you think Ebert is in hiding?"
"I would be scared if I were him. He's responsible for many deaths and has gotten away with it. But powerful men know his secret, monarchs of medicine. He knew a one-off payment wouldn't satisfy them. I bet he's not even in this [[country->EndA]]."This is the end of Interrogator: Part One.
