nice bike...I'm jealous

paul_one
Well I'm Tr0n - nice to make your acquaintance Jealous!

:P

Nice bike. How does it handle?

scobert
Brand new to this forum...let alone any forum...nice to meet you Tr0n. Have had ideas for a long time, and one night decided to see if I could make my own text adventure game, since i love playing them. Which brings me here and very questionable considering I have no idea what I am doing.

GameBoy
the top forum is the place to ask about Quest related stuff. Many of our users have extensive knowledge with using Quest and will be glad to help you.

The bike handles great, except in strong winds :P Summer will be a good time for sure. I get a lot of people come over and compliment me on my bike, and I especially love the people who mistake it for a Harley.

Elexxorine
Lol. You still going to come and kidnap me like you said you would?

GameBoy
No... lol.

scobert
Well, it's good to know that I wont be thrown to the dogs. Been reading around, and you guys seem to be a pretty small close knit group of people who respond well when questions arise.

Hope I don't annoy you guys too much with my questions.

Cryophile
I'm sure that won't be a problem. If you did any digging you'll probably uncover numerous flame-wars, but most of those are eons ancient between a few members!

scobert
good to know...I just don't want to seem like an annoying tick every time I come out with a question that seems too easy or idiotic.

GameBoy
the flame-wars are just banter. there's no real hatred in this community.

Cryophile
That's true. Ask any and all questions you have, no matter how silly or simple they seem. If you don't ask you'll just strain yourself trying to figure it out on your own, and that's sort of pointless isn't it? No matter the question, somebody will attempt an answer. It's just how you learn.

Elexxorine
We're really quite friendly when yo get to know us. We'll all try to help if you have any problems... the best peopel to ask for coding help is either me (especially if it's multiplayer stuff), tron, and maybe slayer or zelimos. So Scobert, what kind of game were you thinknig of making?

scobert
Well...friends and myself sometimes play Dungeons and Dragons, and recently I created a massive quest that involves a lot of puzzle opening and key finding and people convincing. Anyway, with as much thought as I put into it, I thought that I could try my hand at making it into a computer game. Though how to start is one thing...putting it together is another. Now in DnD, there is monster fighting and leveling up, which I am not interested at all in adding to this at this point, but creating a world of oddities I am.

Locked boxes within locked boxes, citizens who need to be "persuaded" to give you information, large mechanical dragons and deep wells you have to climb down...that sort of thing. I don't want the player to get to die...at least not right now...so say the player will need to either find, barter, or buy a good sturdy rope and figure out how to attach it, before they can go climbing down the well...stuff like that.

At least this is the idea at hand.

Elexxorine
Neat. I love D&D, but also play the riddle of steal, paranoia and my own game i made up (based on HavenHold)... lol. I've got codes and such for leveling and fighting if you're interested...

scobert
Thanks....I tell ya if I need them.

I am thinking that I want to try and make the game as emersable as possible. That when a player goes into a room with a description like '...and the walls are covered in peeling green wallpaper...' that if you choose to look at the wallpaper, you won't get a messabel that there is no wallpaper to look at or that all you can do is look at it considering it is just a scenery object, but be able to tear off a piece if you want, or color on it with a crayon (if you find one), or anything that you think of. Though I don't want to go to far, or else one room might take me a year.

I don't know a THING about ASL scripting, so it's not a good to ask me :P
I used to use Quest ages ago, but slowly drifted away from using it. I'd like to start using it again but only when I know I can sit down and actualy finish the game. But I like the community, that's why I'm still here.

scobert
Well I have no idea what ASL scripting is...I am trying to use the QDK system. Is it easier to script?

The .asl files contain the scripts. The QDK program generates those scripts. Some people prefer to script instead of using QDK, as it does give you better control over your content. QDK may also produce bugs which generate errors in the script, so it's handy to know some basic ASL in order to fix those problems.

But it's not rocket science, it just takes time to sit down and read the help document, and learn it as you go along, something which I should have done myself.

Elexxorine
A truely interactive world? Nice, I'm maknig one of those too, it's hard work though...

Yeah, there's a select few of us that post reguarly on here, and even more that occasionally post, but we're all very helpful.
If you dig back a couple of years, you find a few arguments, but in reality we were probably all being stupid. Me included :P
I'm sure we'll be able to help you with whatever you need!
