Gmail

Got 6 invites, who needs? (note: not wants... NEEDS)

Alex
Is there anybody who DOESN'T have a stack of Gmail invites these days? Even I have 6, or 1 depending on which window I believe.

davidw
Wow. A whole GB of storage space for e-mails. For free.

Ironically, that's just what my Outlook Express e-mail service does. For free. Only with more storage space.

GameBoy
*shrugs* just offering

davidw
Sorry if that sounded sarcastic. I've just spent the last few months wondering what's supposed to be amazing about 1 GB of storage space.

I don't know, but why not give people the chance to find out?

davidw
Fair enough. In the meantime I'll continue using Outlook Express which has a measly 110 GB of storage space.

007bond
I wouldn't mind an account, if they're still on offer. Just to try out.

I think Im Dead
Realistically, people could easily start warez mail rings with it, raping googles bandwidth and probably hurting their little set up they got going, but I don't think anyone would want to do that to google.

Honestly I use my GMail for newsletters I want to archive, if you are in a lot of developer circles or even if you just like signing up for a lot of porn mail and penis increasing ads, it's nice to have that much space.

007bond
Exactly. I'd use mine to store Bravenet emails and Garfield Comics.

paul_one
I don't have a gmail invite!! *waves arm about frantically*

... I did get asked if I wanted an account by a friend, but I refused... No need for a third email account.

GMAIL IS EVIL

007bond
I agree. The whole thing about Ads is to much, and is pretty much an invasion of privacy. That's why I would only use it for newsletters and mailing lists where I wish to archive the messages.

paul_one
Hah... Everything they talked about there applies to EVERY other e-mail account you can have... PLUS the fact that an e-mail is sent around multiple places (including all the information services) around the globe. It can be picked up, read or altered in- no it can't. I was lying!.

They only picked on Gmail because everyone's gotta be against something!

Proof? So if i stuck a load of crap on a website, you'd believe it, no matter what?

007bond
Well it's not exactly that. Gmail is invading people's privacy by scanning your emails and displaying ads relevant to what is in it. A possible reason y it is taking so long to officialy launch Gmail is because they are perfecting the email scanning technology!

GameBoy
funny, i haven't had any ads and i've used it for a while now.

May I be the first to say who ****ing cares? They don't record your emails so it doesn't matter.

davidw
How do you know they don't?

they do it says in the licence :D

I think Im Dead
They do actually say so in the license, a big part of what Google does is collect and archive inforamation(images, text, webpages). The thing about Gmail pointed out in that site is that they are not deleting the content from their servers after 30 days as per usual mail servers practice.

We all know you can usually google your name and find something interesting or sometimes even related to you, this is just an extension of that that people are weary about.

Yahoo Mail and Hotmail don't delete emails after 30 days.

paul_one
Quite correct.... And even if you ask them to delete them you're never 100% certain they're deleted (not even from a home machine).
And frankly, emails aren't secure until you encrypt them with a bad-ass 9216-bit PGP type program... Even then it's not un-crackable - but it'll take a few years!

Then again what are you doing sending messages like that over email anyway? Send them via snail mail where they can be burnt away - or encrypted and jumbled IP2IP secure chat/e-mailing system (a new one was announced the other day so geek.com says).

A few projects are already in work and available for download that allow you to "mount" your gmail account(s) as individual 1gig drives on your pc for storage purposes. I'm sure google doesn't approve of it, so I won't link to anything, but start googling if you are curious.

007bond
If Google don't approve of it, why would they have web pages catalogued that related to this content? And plus the fact that this would really only be useful when you have really filled up your Gmail acount to about 5/8 of the way full.

I don't believe it's google that provides these links, but other people in the "Warez Industry" perhaps?

007bond
I know that, but people at google screen the pages before they are put into the search database. If they don't like the idea of mounting your email account onto a drive, why would they put it into the search database?

lol, wtf? do you even know what you're talking about here?

I think Im Dead
He was trying to say that if you can google search and find how to abuse gmail, it must be approved of in some way by google.

The problem with his argument is that google doesn't screen sites added to their engine. It works something along the lines of, their search engine scours(the internet), scans(sites found for something like anchored links), and archives the information(nice little cached option pages have through google). Then when you search for something, it finds pages with relevant information stored in it's database and couts them all out for you.

Sorry if I'm not perfect on "How it works" but it's something along those lines,

People have pulled off google pranks that exploit the search engines design, quite a bit actually, google that for more info.

Yeah, well with the amount of pages about to hit 4,300,000,000 soon (currently at 4,285,199,774, as of the 14th of October), you're bound to find what you want. Unfortuantely, a lot of the pages that come up on the first two pages is irrelevent, and Google and other search engines are trying to find ways to make it relevant! Oh, and thanks for the insight into how Google gets pages ITID.

You can search ANYTHING on google, this just shows that they don't really care what comes up, and don't monitor it. The first 2 pages ARE relevent, as they are the best matches for your search. The further down you get, the less likely you will find what you want.
