Is there a reason why game descriptions can't be processed like text that might include HTML directives? Noticed this when I added a web address recently when a clickable link would have been more helpful.

You can't include web links anywhere on the site at the moment, though I may reconsider this as part of the redevelopment of the site which is currently underway.
Looks like the game descriptions got left out during the site remodel.
My first thought was this was to avoid SPAM, but it's easier to post in the forum than it is to submit a game -- and we can (of course) post HTML links in the forums. So, I'll go with this:
Maybe Alex doesn't want game listings that might include a link to play a game on a different site? (This doesn't seem right either. I'm mainly just bumping this, because I've wanted to post links to other relevant games in the description before, too.)
Yes, it would make sense if game descriptions could use Markdown, just the same as forum posts. I don't have any objection to links in game descriptions. So I may indeed finally get round to this at some point (keeping my promises from 2013...)
