Hello,
I have been trying to follow this advice to get Quest 5.8 working on Linux (I'm on EndeavourOS, arch-based)
https://textadventures.co.uk/forum/samples/topic/nwsz5gf0te6qdtfrwzdmga/quest-5-8-working-in-wine
I have all the prereqs installed and whatnot, I follow the instructions to the T and yet... when I try to launch quest the UI is completely blacked out, and it fails to download the 'front page' thingy.
Installing the program as-is before following these steps actually gave me a slightly better time, the UI was visible, the 'front page' downloaded, but I couldn't resize the window else it'd become a black screen, and I couldn't get any of my Quest games to work.
If someone is able to help it would be greatly appreciated. I'm missing the magic to ever get something to work with wine properly even though others can just have stuff like this work out of the box.
Hello,
That worked for me back in 2021, but I have the same issues as you now. I sort of generally know where to click to switch the main screen's tab to "Edit Games". If you can pull that off with the black screen, you can actually see the editor screen, but it quickly goes black in places and doesn't work.
I see there is an issue on GitHub from 2022 which explains how someone did it, and includes a patch: https://github.com/textadventures/quest/issues/1158
I haven't tried the one from GitHub yet, but I am about to try it right now. I'll be back soon to report my findings.
Well... I got the same results you did.
I couldn't get the packages from the links posted in the GitHub issue to install in WINE on Arch Linux, though.
Now I'm wondering if the version of WINE from 2021 is the version to use for this. I definitely had Quest fully operational in WINE on Arch Linux back then.
Anyway, it looks like the only way to use the Quest editor on Linux right now is using the online editor.
Sorry. I tried. The stuff on GitHub might work for you, though. Arch Linux is bleeding edge and very fussy.
Weird, I was able to get quest to work on the Mac with the winetricks that were shared in the forums. But granted, it's a different os. I just used the most recent wine build. It's useless for editing though, just playing games =/
