The Italian Renaissance began in the fourteenth century. Guilds controlled industry, and each occupation had it’s own guild. These regulations included the quality of the product, the quantity made, and the prices. It was very difficult to create a new businesses to limit competition. Guilds were headed by the best or wealthiest member and also determined education for children. Children would begin an apprenticeship at six or seven years old and live with their mentor and work as an errand boy until they worked up to being a business person. They usually spent ten years working with one mentor. When people moved to new cities, they had to apply to a cities guild and be tested on their abilities.
