Review for First Times
19 Oct 2012
Okay, I was missing the tower. For those who miss it, there is a door that is locked at the beginning, that opens up somewhere in the middle of the game in the southeastern section.

And with that, a review!

So, this game is absolutely fantastic. Definitely deserves full on 5 out of 5 stars. It is not perfect, but for what it is, it's amazing.

It really builds a powerful atmosphere of fear, and gives a strong sense that the world is out to get you. You do horrible things, because if you don't, you can't progress, which makes the inevitable terribleness feel more like your fault. The use of sound is perfect, and specifically the 'ritual room' is one of the most harrowing places I've ever managed to be. Further, the green eyed doll, despite being rendered purely in text (or possibly even because of it, and having to use my imagination) is the single most disturbing and unnerving thing I've ever had to deal with in a game. The game is very much powerful at building atmosphere, and the story itself is heavily symbolic in a way that's very interesting to parse out.

My few nitpicks would be the southwestern segment not being obvious about opening up, and then not having any buildup when a creepy moment happens, so it feels somewhat out of place and forced. Having to leave the ritual room and come back also helps to desensitize you to it, which I think is a bit of a lost opportunity. And lastly, after the green eyed doll moment, the doll remains where it is, giving the exact same message. I feel like, maybe, that room should have just been locked afterwards, the character unwilling to go back in there for fear. But again, these are little nitpicks. The game itself was fantastic, and is worth everyone's time.
