A Hobbit Trek by Crispin
A giant flood has ravaged the countryside, sweeping aside villages and destroying homes. You were caught up in the raging waters and carried away to a strange land. The flood drops you off in the branches of an overhanging tree where you wisely stay until the water goes down. You are relatively unharmed, however, because you are a hobbit and hardy. Try to survive and find your way home to Bree.

Short, simple, easy to work through but rewarding, and oozing charm - this adventure feels more like The Hobbit (the novel) than The Hobbit (the text adventure). I was a little surprised to see the game end when it did - not because of the length of the game, which I see as a strength for a lighthearted adventure like this, but because I found it a little anticlimactic; one extra encounter, just to say "you're almost there, keep pushing on!" would have made this a clear 5 stars.

Evanp243, the commands to use in this game are fairly simple- I tried to stay with the 'use X on Y' or 'give X to Y' commands. Let me know if you need clearer hints!
ocp46061, if you had to make a bridge, what is one thing in your inventory that can hold things together or secure them so they don't move? I can give you more details if you need them!

I had a lot of fun playing this, for many of the reasons that make Quest games in general fun: the puzzles are the right amount of difficulty (they make you think, but they're all solvable with a little creativity), the characters were charming and very much likable, the descriptions were vivid but not exhausting, and the entire gameplay experience felt fluent (plus there are a variety of environments.) As another person recently stated, this game is a tad on the short side (and the ending is a tad abrupt), but for all significant intents and purposes, that is its only flaw.

'Spose I should get around to reviewing this one. As others have stated, it's ridiculously charming, and even when I got stuck on one particular puzzle, playing was just a fun and relaxing experience all around.
The only real flaw I came across was that in some of the rooms with objects lying around, they were still described as being there after I picked them up. The game has been out for awhile, so I suppose chances of a bug fixed version are slim, but just pointing it out.
Also, while most of the puzzles were good ones, I felt they relied too much on the 'use object on object' style solutions. That's something that seems weirdly endemic to Quest games so I can hardly fault the author for it, but it would be nice if the game also recognized more natural commands--cutting something with a knife instead of 'using' the knife, for instance.
In the end though this is still one of the better traditional IF games I've come across on this site and the good feelings it gave me won out over any minor technical issues. I kind of wanted to just run around and let the character making hobbit-y observations about things forever. :)

Sorry Crispin I just now saw your reply. I have what I need to secure...whatever the other item is. I'm just not sure what I'm looking for.
And Is there anything that can be done with the sofa?

cheesey,
If you have explored the whole area (without crossing the bridge), you should have two particular items in your inventory. Having bandaged your foot, you can now get into the hoard, but you still need to get rid of the troll before you can explore it. If you use one item on the other item, it will give you what you need to deal with the troll.
Let me know if you want something more explicit!
