Down There by Frieschultz

Legend tells that in the Past Age of Daragas, the Desert Witch Kallana created an orb to help control and harness the evil that was laying waste to the land. But something went wrong and the orb became the very thing it was designed to combat. Kallana quickly learned that everything and everyone that came into contact with the orb became an instrument of turpitude and destruction. Even the Desert Witch, herself, slowly succumbed to the dark powers of her creation.
Aware her sanity was ebbing away, Kallana made a place in the underground recess of her home for the orb, and filled the space with creatures from the forest, knowing the orb would transform them into wild monsters who, ironically, would keep people away from the area.
It is believed that Kallana , herself, become one of these 'protectors'.
Over a century has passed and it seems the orb's power can no longer be detained. Strange and frightening creatures have been seen in the area; animals have been found mutilated and people from the near-by villages have disappeared. As Captain of the Regional Guard you have been assigned to discover the truth of the orb and, if the legend bears fruit, put an end to it once and for all.
You have recruited the powerful wizard, Gadan, who asserts that everything you have heard is true. He gives you, what he assures you is, a powerful spell that will encase the orb in pure light, disabling its evil. Gadan cannot say how long the spell will last.
He cannot even guarantee you will survive the spell.
If you even get that far.
You travel through the day to arrive at the old house just as night is falling. The place glows with evil and you spine chills at the thought of what may await you. You take a deep breath, grip the hilt of your sword and proceed. Using the directions Gadan gave you, you find the part of the house where the door to the cellar sits. A cold sweat breaks out on your forehead when you spy the open trapdoor, and you almost turn and run at the hideous howl that suddenly fills the air. But you find your courage and, slowly, approach the trapdoor. Before descending, you take a moment to pull the torch from the sheath on your back and light it. Then, without taking time for one more thought, you steel yourself and begin your climb DOWN THERE.
