Night House is the 4th game I've tried by bitterkarella. The others were Santa Carcossa Nights, All Visitors Welcome, and Poppet.
Once again, everything worked without glitches, and I finished the game under my own steam. I often got stuck, expecially when advancing to the next chapter, but always the challenge was a fair one. You have to wrack your brains for new ways of achieving something. Often, more than one way is indicated.
The writing and backgroung detail are in a league of their own, and judging by the reviews in here, people are getting really immersed. As with some of the other games I mentioned, this has two possible endings, which is where you get to choose what sort of a person you'd like to be.

Wow XD I never actually noticed... For anyone else who comes in here looking for how to open the box (at least I didn't notice) when you click on the box and 'look at', you get an extra line underneath the box that says 'strapping tape' and you can just click 'cut'.
I'm sorry for bothering you about this, I'm apparently not perceptive enough. Thank you so much.

Update: I restarted the game and still can't get past the box. With every command I try it says either 'I can't see that' or 'you can't use them that way'. Is there anything I can do about this? I'd hate to leave it unfinished, I'm really curious with the stuff I couldn't keep my eyes away from in the walkthrough...

Hi,
I've read all the other comments, and I tried all the options you mentioned, but I'm still stuck with the box. I've tried 'open box with scissors', 'use scissors on box', 'cut tape', 'use scissors to open box', 'use scissors to cut box', 'use scissors on box', 'use scissors with box'...
I downloaded the game (and Quest) to be able to play locally after a hint from a review I found online (and after it timed out on me when I was at the computer). I kinda hope this is gonna be the last time I have to start over. I love the game so far, and I have the impression that I'm grasping the ways to solve the puzzles without too much trouble (again, so far), but I've had to look up the walkthrough to get the right commands, because it's true they're pretty finicky.

Enjoying this but got stuck so ended up having to consult the walkthrough. (WARNING SPOILERS)
When I ask either of the baby monitors about anything, I just get static? Also, despite opening the box in the basement and reading all the contents, I can't empty is - I can't take the items and the Empty Box command doesn't work.

An excellent game with an interface that doesn't quite do the job. It isn't Quest - I've played other games by bitterkarella that worked very nicely - but primarily I found it frustrating how specific I had to be with my commands to get the game moving along.
For example, there is one part of the game where the player opens a taped up box with safety scissors. I had to type several commands "Cut tape," "Open box with scissors," etc. before coming up with "Use Scissors on Box," which wasn't much of an intuitive command. The rest of the game suffers from this same kind of flaw, in my opinion.
That said, the fantastic story well makes the effort worth it, but as far as my review goes of "Night House" as a functioning game, well, it could be better.

I need to cut strapping tape on large cardboard box in basement with scissors. When I typed "OPEN BOX WITH SCISSORS" (followed from walk-through at http://www.guttersnipecomic.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/nighthouse-walkthrough2.html) and then the game returned a sentence "I can't see that."
What should I do?

Honestly, i thought this was pretty great! I'm a new comer to this curious world of Text based games, and puzzles really aren't my thing, but even then, this game made itself great at guiding me naturally, without giving me the answer directly. The only complain i think i have, is that there were a pair of puzzles that i thought the answer was too "Out of what you would think in that situation"... to call it somehow? But again, that was probably me, who sucks at puzzles.
Anyways, great game, i highly recommend it.

This is a fantastic blend of creepiness and genuine emotion. The story was very, very well written. At the beginning it was the atmosphere that I found outstanding, the author crafted a very eerie setting (I was sincerely scared to go outside). At the end, I have to admit I got a little teary.
A very well done story.

Wow, what a fun experience (also creepy and tense, sometimes!) This was my first time playing a text-based game (or Interactive Fiction game), so I'm not well versed on what a really good IF game is, but as far as games go, I can say this one was brilliant. Besides the super useful menu where you could make commands without having to type, plus the map, the absolute best thing about the whole thing was the story. Learning more about the game world and making suppositions while reading notes and/or researching through the encyclopedia was so much fun I almost felt like a detective. The writing is simple but beautiful and very effective at setting an atmosphere. I also loved the fact that it had 2 endings, plus, I felt extremely satisfied at one point in the story where someone evil gets wrecked! I can say that I cried a little when I came to the conclusion of who the main character really was... Even though it was my first time playing a game of this genre, I never had any trouble at progressing through it - except for the spider part , where I was really stumped. The only problems I encountered were that, when resuming the game, the rain sounds would cease playing, however, I solved it by playing a Youtube video on the background :D; the other issue is that sometimes the page would freeze. Even though it would come back to after a while, I would - most times, however -, simply close it and resume after my last save.
Well then, after this fantastic experience, I'll definitely try out more IF games!

This was actually really fun to play. It wasn't too obvious what the plot was and the twists here and there kept things interesting, and I found myself wanting to learn more and more. Of course, I'm a bit disappointed that because I kinda thought the pond might've had a role to play in this, but otherwise, good job! And I'm glad we could choose where we wanted to go in the end as well.

It's an okay game, with good game design, but unfortunately it's bogged down by a pretty cliche story ripped straight from Stranger Things. My biggest issue with the game is how a lot of the shit in the game that seems important, like the pond hidden behind the heap and the chainsaw without the gas, aren't used at all in the story. Also, what about the slinky and the rubberband ball? There are so many threads that aren't resolved regarding the environment and items that it feels unfinished. I was also very disappointed when I realized the betamax tape wasn't the parents sex tape. Why the hell was it next the "magic wand?" The gameplay, most of the storytelling, and the map were good, but I'd still give it a 6/10. Back to the pond though, I'm assuming the creator thought these were red herrings of some kind, but it's not fun when you spend a million lines of dialogue trying to turn the slinky and rubberband ball into a makeshift fishing pole. I wanted those fish. I wanted to get in that pond. I expect remake on my desk by Monday. Also, the game kept freezing on me. I had to make an account just to play this masochistic fuck fest mess of a game. If you're a fan of Tommy Wiseau's The Room, give it a try. I wish there was more dinocoptors lore. I'd like a dinocoptors visual novel dating sim. I want to date fem brontowheeler, but I would also appreciate a gay option as well. I think a game like that could blow other sim titles like Persona 5 right out of the water. The water of the pond. That I wanted to go in. Anyway, 10/10 unnecessary hand washes. Also, pond. Also, why was the spider referred to as a spider even after the game acknowledged it had too many arms to be a spider? Also, catskin was creepy, too bad he lasted five seconds before he was as dead as Lightning McQueen. Was there even a possibility I could've died in this? Because aside from the beginning, I never felt like I was in danger. I was sprinting throughout that house with wild abandon. But, ag

Alright Kids,
Let's Look into this wonderful game about a house. AT NIGHT.
Well, this game had a lot of good in it. The sounds were nice. (When they had it), and the game gives good descriptions about most rooms, keeping in pace with the narrative and atmosphere. The story is pretty good, but the twist is fairly obvious right away and perhaps a bit cliche. You still get invested in the story. So much of the game play is good, the map is a wonderful inclusion as is the compass and inventory. Overall, a good game with a good story, what's not to love?
Good question, and one with apparently three answers. First, lots of people are complaining about a time limit. I saw no time limit, but I was and remained, logged in throughout my entire run through of the game. Now the second problem isn't with the game itself, but rather, with the guide. The walkthrough/guide only really helps for certain bits of the walkthrough and the majority of the time, that wasn't what I was stuck on. What was I stuck on, you may ask. To that, I reply, I was stuck on the section where you put the blood on the decoy, not because I didn't cook the meat, but because I didn't type the right command. Multiple times. My third and final problem with this game is the type here box. I got stuck constantly trying to type in something it would accept. It only takes very specific phrases, and I wanted to give up several times because I knew what to do, but the game wouldn't let me. This is the game's weakest spot. And it's also how you get lore and backstory, but it makes lore, backstory, and any other time you have to use the type here box incredibly tedious.
To summarize, it's a good game, but be very specific with the type here box. It's the scariest part of the game.
Now, I need to go take out the trash. AT NIGHT.

Hi Kysg,
Unfortunately it seems to be an issue with the site, where it will time you out if you have any hiccups in your Internet connection. If you're logged in, the site should let you save your progress. But you would probably have the best luck by downloading the game and playing it from your desktop. Thanks for playing!

I think I glitched the game. I tried to open the box in the basement using the screwdriver, and nothing happened, so I looked up the walkthrough and tried the scissors instead. Now both the screwdriver and scissors are gone and I cannot interact with the box, despite it saying that it is open. I read the walkthrough again but I can't figure out how to fix it. Is this supposed to happen or did I break it?

I loved the game, I loved reading about Jeremy's sessions and trying to figure out what was going on but sadly I never got to I thought the people who kept saying there was a time limit simply just hadn't made a profile so their session had expired, but I do have a profile, it's activated and I should be able to play the game through, but my session timed out and I had to start all over again. I will eventually finish thes I'm sure, but not right now. I'm a bit frustrated that I got so far (Most of the way through chapter 3 though I don't know how many chapters there are) and now I'll have to start all over again I'm playing online and I don't know if that has anything to do with it but thanks for the run I'll be back later I'm sure.

Great story; a lot of work has been put into this. There are a few 'undefined' error messages, and it can be picky about verbs you can use.
(I found the suggestion of another hidden garage stash a little misleading... and never fully understood how the shed videotape or phantasmagoria concerto factored into it. But it's mostly a detailed, engaging story!)

I don't want to spoil the game. Read on if you're having trouble with the dummy!
Type "Put Jack O' Lantern on Dummy". Then you can put on the cone and the coat.
I usually hate spoilers/people who put tips in the comments, but I had to spend FOREVER figuring it out; I actually had to hunt down a walk-through before I could move on! This game RULES though!

I thought the gameplay and story was good, and the atmosphere was spooky, but the time limit was SUPER annoying. If I left my IPad for 2 minutes, my session would expire. The worst part was when I got to the part when I had to gove the ghost the Atari cartridge, and the game couldn't find the cartridge, and my dang session expired!!! I was so mad. So next time, don't put a time limit on your game, and make sure everything is defined.
