The Birthday Assignment DEMO by skypioneer

This is the first chapter of my action-oriented text adventure, which I call "The Birthday Assignment" for reasons relevant to the plot.
It's a steampunk set in a typical western movie - or so I'd like to think. Read it yourself, see how it works for you.

This is my first TA game, so I don't expect it to stand up against some of the greater TA's here. But I want some feedback on how I did.

Peace out.

It's alright. Couldn't find Kevin anywhere though? Bit short, but then it is a demo... I can't really make a desicion until I have a go at the full version.

Hey hey everyone. I'd just like to announce that after months of doing squat, I've finally been motivated enough to pick it up and polish the game off again. I will promise:
- A more detailed day 1. I'll be fleshing out Prospect, adding a new character and side quest (this one slightly more difficult than recruiting Kevin but nonetheless very easy).
- Day 2! Day 1 was pretty un-eventful, but you can expect a violent encounter with bandits in the second day.
- Bug fixes and general tidiness overall. I'll be sure to end slightly half decently this time round to justify your 10 minutes spent replaying the whole game, lol.

Stay tuned and thanks for all of the comments.

3 more things: First, you may want to allow the player to "go to" helm or "take" helm to save the annoyance of typing "man helm". Second, When I recruit Kevin and buy the kegs and choose to fight the pirates closequarters with upgrade is the same as the normal fighting pirates ; I can't get the disaster scenario. Finally, when I get + 1 respect from the crew for the kegs and at the end for succeding through the storm/pirates, it says I only have 4 respect instead of the 5 I should have (I know it doesn't matter because it is the end but for the full game it will matter.

There is an error when you choose the fight the pirates in close combat (with kevin without alcohol), you can't click to continue when the pirates snigger and you have to type a random key and then press enter to continue. This needs to be fixed.

Amazing! I love how the game is as detailed as a quality novel. I look foward to the full release. However, I do not believe it belongs in the historical section. The fantasy section is more proper (airships were never big because after WWII jets replaced them).

I like how you made it, and the theme of it, but sometimes it confused me. Sometimes, I wondered where'd I end up if I went north, or east, or west, or... You get what I mean. Something that could really improve the game (for me, that is) is to explain where each direction goes, preferably right under the room description. But it's a great game, better than anything I've written and better than some (or even most) of the games around here. Good job.

Cheers mate.
Yep, you figured it out, you have to push any key to proceed to the menues. Do this by going Other>Wait for player to push a key.
And yeah, I'm working on the second town right now, so while I'm at it I'll go through and add that to all of them. Cheers for the feedback.

Oh, I've added two disastrous endings.
For the first, recruit Kevin > buy the beer > set off > choose to fight the pirates.
For the true disaster ending, set off > choose to fight the pirates without buying upgrades.

Anyway, I'm glad that you liked it, I'll get onto working on the rest of it, thanks for your input!

Very well put together in my opinion. Considering this is a demo version I think you may of out done yourself! I liked the menus when talking to characters, it comes in very useful. Speaking of, I liked how you made it so they don't display right off. In my game a menu pops up the moment you click/type "speak to". The only thing is I didn't know you set it up like that at first, because nothing popped up. I figured it out though. This issue is resolved in "The Armaments Store" however, in there, when you speak to the gunsmith at the end it says:
"Push a key to display the shop menu".

Only recommendation is that you might want to add that in the other areas, so that people know to push a key to make the menu appear and then can select their choice.

Again though, very well done especially considering this was a demo.

The first thing I'd like to note is that when I tried playing this game online, the "speak to command" didn't seem to work at all. I tried clicking on it, as well as actually typing in the command. Neither worked. I have sense downloaded the game for offline play, and this is no longer an issue. I'm not sure if it's the online player acting up, or my browser (there have been issues with Fire Fox in the past) but it definitely appears that it isn't the game itself. I will write an actual review once I've had the chance to sit down and fully play though the game.
